Obituary of Charles Connors

Well known, former councillor and businessman, Charles David (CD) Connors passed away peacefully at home in his lazyboy chair on Friday November 24, 2023. Charlie was born in Windsor at his Aunt Annie Sherman’s home on the beautiful day of August 3, 1938. He was the son of the late Charles Lewis and Lillian (Bonang) Connors. He had a wonderful life living with nothing much more than the essentials, lots of love and fun. We loved hearing the stories of the Creek (crick) Road over and over again. At the age of sixteen Charlie went to work at Bill Harrison’s I.G.A.store in Windsor for $24.00 a week. He worked there until 1961 then he became the first meat manager for Sobeys in Windsor. A few years later Sobeys moved him to a new store in Kentville as the meat manager. In 1966 he moved his wife and 4 girls to Maitland, Hants Co. He continued to work with Sobeys as meat manager but at the Queen St store in Halifax. While working there Charlie started his own meat business, CD Connors Meats. He left Sobeys in 1969 and went to work for Frieze and Roy in Maitland, after his son, David was born. Charlie was a very hard worker with unrivalled ambition. He eventually left Frieze and Roy to concentrate on his own business, CD Connors Meats. He became government inspected and sold to many big retailers such as Sobeys, Dominion, Capital, and IGA, all over Nova Scotia. He met many wonderful friends from many cultures who would visit his shop for their cultural delicacies every Sunday. His children were there with him working side by side learning many life lessons, the most important being family and working together toward a goal. In 1982 his business became a Limited Company with his son joining him as a partner and the name was changed to C.D. Connors and Son Ltd. They ran the meat business until 1993 when it closed, and Charlie decided to retire. Charlie was always involved in his community and helping his “own back yard”. He was always supporting those less fortunate quietly while trying to raise five children of his own. He had a giving spirit that knew no bounds. In 1972 he decided to run for councillor and ran 7 elections with no defeats. The celebrations after the election wins were like no other and one year the polka and fox-trotting almost caused the building to collapse into the bay. All Charlie’s girls and grandchildren were taught to polka standing on his feet. Charlie loved music and was blessed with four angels who sang beautiful harmony. He toted them everywhere showing them off. He even managed to get enough money together so they could record a record which was played on the radio for some time. He was so proud of them. He loved old architecture and bought and restored many Captains homes in Maitland which he later sold. Charlie was all about quality and never built or renovated a house without plaster walls and a few crystal chandeliers. He also loved to hunt and when October came no one saw him for a couple of months. Many times, he would dress all 5 children in orange, grab his gun, and they would go off exploring the woods: learning about trees, the flora and tasting the bitter spruce gum. Alone, Charlie would get on his side-by-side and go. His last hunt was three weeks prior to his being called home. He was adventurous and loved to travel. There was always a crowd, his Mum and Dad, siblings, friends, then later on his children. Once retired he and Delina purchased a place in Florida and a pontoon boat. Much fun and alligator tours on the canals were had by all. Charlie loved life and lived it to the fullest. His heart overflowed with kindness for everyone. If you met him, he was a friend for life and one you could always rely on. He adored family and remained very close to them. He and his wife, Delina, eventually moved back to Poplar Grove to be closer to his siblings. Charlie is survived his wife Delina, daughters Janice, Charlene, Susan MacQuarrie and Pam (Brent) Ferris, his son David (Daphne), stepson Tracy Sanford, sisters Joan (George) Church and Gladys (Laurie) Parker, sister-in-law Carolyn, mother of his children, Bonnie Thurrott, Papa’s grandchildren, Bonnie Connors, Cody Connors, Kaylie Fisher, Connor MacQuarrie, Chloe MacQuarrie, and Megan Sanford. Great Grandchildren and the twinkle in his eyes, Charli, Auna and Bennett Connors. Many special nieces and nephews who enjoyed his “swings”, the animals, lessons and the antics. Besides his parents Charlie was predeceased by his brothers Garnet (Carolyn) and Donnie, sisters Marie Hanes, Mary Ewing and Ruth Sanford, stepson Ron Sanford and grandsons Bobby Tanner and Cory Connors. Charlie, CD, Dad, Papa, Grampy and Uncle Charlie you will be missed beyond measure. We love you so much. Cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be held Thursday November 30th @ 2pm at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church cemetery, Cedar Road, Maitland, Hants County.
