Catherine "Sue" (Melanson) Thornton ,67,Burntcoat, passed away on July 10, 2013 at home. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of Marie Dorothy "Dot" (Meunier), Halifax and the late Alan Joseph Melanson (1989) Besides her Father she was pre-deceased by her husband Ronald Duncan "Ron" Thornton (2009) . Sue is survived by her daughter Krista Lee Thornton-Harvie (Tracy),and their son William Ronald Randolph Harvie all of Gormanville, daughter Nancy Anne Kiley (Colin) of Dartmouth, brother Anthony Melanson (Margaret) Dartmouth, brother Jack Melanson (Carol -Ann) (NB) and sister Dianne Kell (Neil) Antigonish. Nanny Sue took great pleasure in spending time with her grandson William. Sue's passion was taking care of the young and the elderly in the community. She was one of the founding members of the current Cobequid 4-H Club, and in past years was an active 4-H leader teaching crafts, ceramics and the raising of poultry to young members. Sue always loved animals, especially cats. This love of cats and other animals she passed on to her daughters and to her grandson. Sue requested to be cremated and that a Memorial service or visitation not be held, but instead requested a less formal "Gathering of Family and Friends." Keeping with her wishes, a Reception will be held on Sunday, July 21 from 1-3PM at The Rainbow Community Centre (Green Hall) Gormanville, Hants Co. #60 Hwy 354. All are invited. . A graveside Committal Service at Burntcoat Cemetery will directly follow the reception with family and friends the Rev. Greg Boyd officiating. All friends are invited to join family in paying their respects at the Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
